About

Midway – we have all been there. We all felt stuck and undecided about something before – whether that is deciding whether to have toast or cereal for breakfast or about something larger. Being stuck midway between two points can haunt us, derail us and take over us.

When we are torn between two things, we usually feel the urge to write down what we’re thinking or feeling or, if that doesn’t do the trick, we feel the need to create. It’s a human reaction to want to voice our troubles; put them out into the open as they may feel a little less heavy to carry.

Every one of us does it in our own way; therein lies the beauty in self-expression. There are so many divergent pieces of art that may convey the same emotion but look so distinct because we all experience emotions differently and we all reveal ourselves differently.

Different is a key word here at Midway. We want to honour and celebrate all our differences, and all our varied forms of self-expression – whether it’s through the arts, the written word or by sharing our opinions and experiences.

To help us get there, we have four core concepts:

  • Expression: A big part of Midway is self-expression; it is essentially all Midway is about. We encourage the need to self-express. Keeping your thoughts and feelings bottled up inside is never good. Joining Midway provides you with a megaphone that allows you to share anything your heart desires, whether that is a review of a recent film or a vulnerable piece based on an experience.

  • Acceptance: We are open to any art forms – if you have one in mind that isn’t currently a part of Midway but you are interested in exploring, please reach out to us! We appreciate any and all art. Similarly, we welcome people’s personal stories. It doesn’t matter what they are about; chances are it will find someone who relates to it and needed to read your words. However, we know and understand that everyone is on a different life path and that sometimes it can be difficult to open up. We are here to support and guide you through this process.

  • Open-mindedness: Along with acceptance, at Midway, we cherish those that are open and receptive towards art, stories and topics that may be considered taboo or are not really talked about. Being open-minded is an important quality, as it allows one to see beyond their scope; sometimes seeing something in a different light can be quite illuminating.

  • Individuality: As with any art, it is important to be personal – it makes the piece more human. You can feel when you have unapologetically been yourself when creating something; there is a great sense of satisfaction that comes with it, but it also shines through your work. At Midway, we want to inspire our contributors to be as personal and as open as they can be.
